Tarantino? In MY Star Trek?

It’s more likely than you think. According to Deadline, the Kill Bill, Death Proof, and Django Unchained auteur has expressed interest in joining the J.J. Abrams Star Trek universe. While not the first guess for a new creative mind in this long-running franchise, Quentin Tarantino as reportedly had a whopper of a story idea. So excited by this idea was he, that he pitched it to Abrams for a movie installment. Sources say a meeting of writers is on the table to hear Tarantino’s idea and begin crafting it for a Star Trek installment. Should this come to fruition and be successful, we could be looking at a Tarantino-directed, Abrams-produced sequel.

Granted, this is all in the very early stages at this point. The film industry is notoriously fickle with what it greenlights, and there’s still no guarantee that even if they did take Tarantino’s original idea, that it would arrive to film intact. See one Ridley Scott directed Robin Hood (2010) for example. With a bold new reimagining from Brian Helgeland, the original take was flipped with the Sheriff of Nottingham set in a sort of detective thriller. Then the studios got a hold of it, and the end product was, well, another version of Robin Hood that was rather inferior to the amazing spectacle of Kevin Costner’s 1991 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Or, you know, just look at all the kerfluffle that surrounded Justice League before it finally premiered.

Still, it’s an intriguing notion, if you happen to like Tarantino’s grindhouse-y work. In a few years we may just see Star Trek boldly going where the genre hasn’t pushed before.
