20th Century Fox just released a new trailer for its upcoming movie Hidden Figures. The film, set for limited December 25, 2016, release, is based on the true story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson – three highly competent African American women who, in 1961, were hired by NASA to assist on the successful launching of astronaut John Glenn into space.
The trio, played by Taraji P. Hensen, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe, are shown facing severe scrutiny being women of color in a heavily white boys club. The trailer not only displays some of the movie’s more lighthearted moments as the characters joke about their situation, but also its seriousness when our protagonists need to constantly assert themselves to be taken seriously despite their tested geniuses.

The movie is heavily buzzed to be a serious contender for the upcoming awards season which would break the Academy Award’s streak of nominating all white actors for its four main categories. Besides Hensen, Spencer, and Monáe, Hidden Figures also stars Kirsten Dunst, Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons, and Mahershala Ali.
