Time For Crab: Steamforged Games Announces Two New Additions To Epic Encounters Line: ‘Cove Of The Dragon Turtle’ And ‘Island of the Crab Archon’

Steamforged Games today released two new entries in their Epic Encounters product line of cinematic RPG adventures, Cove of the Dragon Turtle and companion box Island of the Crab Archon

Cove of the Dragon Turtle builds on a product line that’s proven hugely popular amongst the roleplaying community. Each adventure-in-a-box contains everything needed to create an Epic Encounter for the Fifth Edition of the world’s favourite roleplaying game, or any fantasy tabletop RPG.

Game Masters (GMs) can fit each encounter seamlessly into an ongoing campaign or use the sets as short, one shot adventures. This makes it perfect for both new players (especially new GMs) and veteran roleplayers alike.

Cove of the Dragon Turtle is a “boss box”, meaning it contains a single, highly-detailed miniature on a giant base, and provides a stern test for any roleplaying party. It joins companion warband box Island of the Crab Archon in Steamforged’s range of RPG cinematic encounter boxes. Island of the Crab Archon features a full set of cruel, crab-like warriors, making it ideal to pair with Cove of the Dragon Turtle for a themed oceanic encounter.

Richard August, Lead Writer for Epic Encounters, says:

“Who doesn’t love a Dragon Turtle? They’re the best kind of sea monster – big, mysterious, and capable of lunging up from the occluded depths to tear through the rotting hull of a galleon in seconds. And, of course, there’s its breath weapon which renders it fairly lethal at range. Basically, the Dragon Turtle is the ideal kind of Epic Encounter big boss; it places associations and ideas in player’s heads the Game Master can use to their advantage, and it makes one hell of a mini. This fight should get real nasty!”

And Island of the Crab Archon? “The crabs are our first non-classic monster set, and I really hope we’ve designed something that feels both different, and familiar at the same time. The crab-kin (or Karkinos) are resilient foes, and they don’t take kindly to being interrupted while raiding shoreline villages. Their leader, the Archon, is a huge, hulking warrior, and venturing after him is about as dangerous as adventuring gets. Fortunately, the encounter is designed so that you can weaken him before you try and beard him in his lair.”

Many fearsome creatures lurk in the dark places beneath the waves. But all ocean-dwellers cower at the sight of a Dragon Turtle: mightiest of all. Growing far beyond the size of a normal turtle, these draconid creatures attack merchant ships with blasts of scalding water, so as to claim the precious cargo for their own.

This set gives any Game Master the tools to create a cinematic experience in the Cove of the Dragon Turtle that will challenge and thrill their players:

  • 1 enormous, highly detailed, ready-to-paint and play Dragon Turtle miniature on a whopping 110mm base
  • Adventure book woven with information to fuel any GM’s imagination: lore, prompts, monster stats and tips and tricks for building tension and excitement
  • Double-sided game mat
  • Tokens

All sailors love to swap tales of the high seas, telling of narrow escapes from pirates and brutal storms. But there’s one story they save for late at night, most terrifying of all. In hushed voices, they speak of the Karkinos: humanoid in shape, with wicked claws and tough, chitinous armour.

This set gives any Game Master the tools to create a cinematic experience on the Island of the Crab Archon that will challenge and thrill their players:

  • 21 highly detailed, ready-to-paint and play miniatures, including seven unique sculpts
  • Adventure book woven with information to fuel any GM’s imagination: lore, prompts, monster stats and tips and tricks for building tension and excitement
  • Double-sided game mat
  • Tokens

The Ultimate TTRPG Tarot Offers Up Much More Than Collectible Novelty

The Ultimate TTRPG Tarot is based on the classic Rider-Waite Tarot deck, and doesn't do much to alter the overall style of the deck. Instead, Zachary Bacus and colorist Hank Jones replaced the classical esoteric imagery with things straight out of a D&D game. For instance High Priestess has become a Mindflayer, albeit a nerdy one with glasses and a DMG. The art also reflects the overall humor of the cards, which is stuffed to the gills with references and in-jokes straight out of a TTRPG convention. It's sort of like if you mixed a tarot deck up with a game of Munchkin. That writing comes from Jef Aldrich and Jon Taylor, hosts of the System Mastery podcast, who bring their pretty wide experience in tabletop to bear in this deck.
