Thor: Ragnarok Evokes Guardians in Epic New Trailer

With colorful battles, awesome space ships, and a cool sci-fi soundtrack, the latest trailer for Thor: Ragnarok looks to take the series in a new, much-appreciated direction. And one that looks strikingly familiar to your typical Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

I hope I don’t need to clarify this as a good thing.

After Hela, Goddess of Death, invades Asgard, Thor finds himself captured and taken to a gladiator world. With the help of Hulk and some others, he must escape and return to Asgard before Hela destroys it. Hence the name Ragnarok, and the content of yet another great trailer for what’s promising to be one hell of a fun movie. There’s a lot of Hela, a lot of Hulk, and a lot to get excited for. Looks a lot like Guardians, doesn’t it? They even cut Hemsworth’s beautiful flowing hair so he looks more like Chris Pratt. Still not sure I’m over that. I guess I can forgive it when Hela and Hulk look so great, Thor looks so damn charismatic and funny, and the movie looks so beautiful.

Those of us who grew up in the dark ages of the comic book film have always dreamed of a day where these movies could dive fully into the visual and written creativity of these stories. Not that there’s anything wrong with Peter Parker fighting normal thugs in New York or Batman operating more like a special ops soldier taking down terrorists than a superhero capable of somehow holding his own among literal gods. I love both superheroes and most of their movies.

Still, stuff like Thor is what really captures the imagination. I’ve waited my whole life for superhero movies exploring the fantastical elements of their source material. Between audience readiness and technological limits, movies like this were always a dream. Now that they’re here, I hope they succeed and stick around forever.

Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for release on November 3. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett (yaaas queen), Tom Hiddleston, Jeff Goldbum, Tessa Thompson, and Mark Ruffalo.
