See the First Look at Atypical on Netflix

With an eight-episode first season soon to release, Netflix has released a first-look clip at Atypical. The coming-of-age comedy centers on an 18-year old boy named Sam who falls on the autism spectrum.

Watch the clip below:

The coming-of-age aspect is made clear by the date discussion. I think a lot of us can relate to wanting to see boobs, as well. The clip also shows what will hopefully be a respectful portrayal of autism, a disorder* often mistreated in movies and films. I’m not intimately familiar myself, but I have seen the worry Sam’s mother shows here over letting their child undertake even the most basic of social functions. At the same time, the constant worry will wear on someone, especially as they get older.

Hopefully Atypical can continue to find its jokes and storylines without diving into the familiar, distasteful well.

Atypical’s first season hits Netflix on August 11. It stars Keir Gilchrist, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Rapaport (awesome), and Amy Okuda.
