That’s right, we’re approaching the second film of the current Star Wars trilogy, and Disney already has another in the pipeline.
Johnson, the writer and director of this year’s guaranteed money printer in the series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, was announced today as the creator of a brand new trilogy. He is slated to write and direct the first film in the proposed trilogy. These films will move away from the Skywalker clan to focus on new characters and settings from a different part of the universe. Perhaps one a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?
Come on; the joke was too easy to avoid. Don’t boo too loudly.
Considering The Last Jedi remains a month out from hitting theaters, this decision speaks volumes about Disney’s confidence in the film. The trailers have certainly been amazing enough. Some fans have reservations about the supposed dark tone and rumored story choices of the film, but overall anticipation for the latest Star Wars movie is at a fever pitch. You can definitely count me among the fevered.
However, you can’t help but wonder if maybe Disney should have waited to see the reaction to The Last Jedi before making this decision. I guess when you make more money in a year than many other companies make in 20, you can afford to do stuff like this. Here’s hoping the new trilogy brings Knights of the Old Republic into the fold. I need those games to be canon, damn it, they’re still my favorite part of the entire IP.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th, and we’ll see how fans feel about this news afterward. Hopefully, we’ll all be frothing over the idea of Johnson making three more movies in the franchise. Clearly, Disney thinks we will be and is planning accordingly.
