Laurie Metcalf Joins ‘Supergirl’ as Whose Mother?

The actress, best known for her Emmy-winning role in Roseanne as Jackie Harris, will first appear in season three’s fifteenth episode, set to air in 2018. She will play the estranged mother of resident Supergirl geek Winn Schott.

Winn’s father, the villain Toyman, appeared in season one. Their relationship was also estranged, as Winn sought to distance himself from his father’s reputation. It made for probably the strongest arc he’s had so far, as much as we love (well, mostly) his romance with Lyra. Should be interesting to see how the return of his mother in his life brings back those old feelings and fears. Here’s hoping she wasn’t too sympathetic to his father. Winn could use a little support in his life.

And if the prospect of another Winn arc doesn’t excite you, Metcalf apparently joined the show in part to let her youngest daughter meet Melissa Benoist, who is her idol. Come on, mom of the year. If you can use your Hollywood connections for anything, why not that?

Supergirl returned for its third season a little more than a month ago, and we’ve been a fan so far. The show has returned a bit to its roots after an uneven season two, to great effect. Giving Winn an arc with a parent would be another return to the best parts of season one. We can’t wait to see it.
