Say what you will about the Fast & Furious franchise, it’s still alive and kicking, delivering high octane action and with far more diversity than most of the standard Hollywood action fare. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a spin-off from the main franchise, reunites Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, with an added bonus of Idris Elba to boot.
Brixton (Elba) is a ghost, a former agent with cyber-genetically enhanced modifications who now has plans on a massive threat to the world in the name of what he deems “Evolution.” Elba is, as usual, effortlessly cool and charismatic, even when he’s trying to end the world. A threat level of this magnitude calls for the Odd Couple team up of federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and former agent turned villain turned anti-hero Deckard Shaw (Statham). Naturally, the two get along like oil and water, and the trailer plays up their comedic tensions. Also joining the world-saving crew is MI6 agent (and also Deckard’s sister) Hattie Shaw, played by Vanessa Kirby. Some might remember Kirby’s turn in Mission Impossible – Fallout, however, it looks as though she has far more opportunity to whet her teeth on the ass-kicking grind in Hobbs & Shaw.
Also starring are Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver) and Joe Anoa’i (WWE’s Roman Reigns) as Duke Hobbs, Luke’s brother. Fun fact, Anoa’i and Johnson are related and part of the famed Anoa’i wrestling dynasty. Hellen Mirren also returns as Magdalene Shaw, Hattie and Deckard’s mother. Hobbs & Shaw is directed by stuntman turned director David Leitch (Deadpool 2), and is slated for an August 2, 2019 release.
