With 31 days to go, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina has hit another stretch goal: $7.5 million. That is ten times their original goal of $750,000. Trying to keep up to date on this Kickstarter has been a whirlwind, and there’s a good chance they’ll have raised even more by the time this publishes. With the constant support flowing in, more content is being added at a rapid pace to try to keep up. There’s even talk they’ll have to just start inventing stretch goals. The cast has done multiple Q&As to discuss their new plans, and they have A LOT of them.
To start with, the animated special has turned into a series. A fully animated, scripted, (and, of course, voice acted), ten episode series. We are now at a total of 176 minutes of content: almost three hours of high fantasy silliness and drama. The Briarwood Arc has been added, which is something viewers did get to see on stream. This arc was huge for Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III (EN: gesundheidt), but also had lasting affects for the rest of the campaign. For many, myself included, it was one of the best-loved arcs in the entire Vox Machina campaign.
(If you’re not sure what any of this means, Jana wrote a helpful character guide a little while back that should help)
These stretch goals are also funding “One Shot” episodes, spotlight episodes covering side stories and supporting characters that are possibly exciting fans more than any other addition. We will get to see an epilogue to The Search for Grog, which was a continuation of the first campaign performed in a live show earlier this year. The characters of Campaign Two will get the animation treatment as The Mighty Nein battles Vox Machina, while guest stars (which ones are currently unclear) will see their characters on the screen as they take part in a Guest Star Battle Royale.
What’s next for their Kickstarter? One final stretch goal is listed at $8.8 million. This stretch goal will complete the Briarwood arc, and add one more one shot. That one shot will see the beloved and often missed Ashley Johnson (Pike Nickfoot, Yasha Nydoorin) running a game for the first time (a tempting bribe to be sure). This project has grown immensely, and as the support continues, we may see yet more stretch goals added. And with 28 days to go, there’s still time to contribute if you’ve missed out so far.
