Chaosium Launches Customizable TTRPG System ‘Basic Roleplaying: The Universal Game Engine’

Chaosium, creators of the award-winning Call of Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying game, have released Basic Roleplaying: The Universal Game Engine in PDF, with hardcover to follow later in 2023.

Basic Roleplaying: Universal Game Engine is the complete guide to BRP—the same system that powers Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, Pendragon, Rivers of London, and countless others.

BRP’s Universal Game Engine is available royalty-free for personal and commercial use under the Open RPG Creative license, aka ORC license.

“BRP is adaptable to any world of a creator’s choosing—either previously established, or created from scratch. Under the ORC license, tabletop creators can use these rules to create their worlds, scenarios and tabletop roleplaying games, royalty free and without further permission from Chaosium,” said Michael O’Brien.

With mechanics for magic, psychic powers, mutations, superpowers, weapons, equipment, and vehicles applicable to any setting and genre, Basic Roleplaying: Universal Game Engine is adaptable to any world of your choosing—either previously established, or created from scratch.

Chaosium was one of the first game companies to sign on to the Open RPG Creative License initiative being spearheaded by Paizo.

“The final ORC license has not been released yet, but a draft is available. The final version will govern the BRP Universal Game Engine, as an example of an open RPG license that anyone can use”, said Chaosium vice president Michael O’Brien.
