New Black Panther Trailer Shows Off Wakanda’s Sci-Fi Chops

A small, isolated, somewhat secret nation in northeast Africa, Wakanda is the main source of vibranium in the Marvel universe. This wonder metal is the main resource for the country and used for such superhero tools as Captain America’s shield or Black Panther’s suit. Wakanda is also considered the most technologically advanced nation in the Marvel Universe. The nation developed in isolation and discovered many scientific breakthroughs long before the rest of the world.

Such is the focus of this fantastic new trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther.

At least half the shots in this trailer are straight out of your usual sci-fi setting. Flying cars, crazy holographic interfaces, highly advanced weaponry, and alien architecture all feature heavily. As someone who isn’t completely familiar with Black Panther and Wakanda, this has always intrigued me most about this movie. It’s all such a cool mix of futuristic tech and a more contemporary, tribal aesthetic. Judging by the focus this setting receives, Marvel knows how cool it all is and has gone to great lengths to show off Wakanda and its citizens.

Which, you know, might be important in a movie about T’Challa donning the Panther costume and fighting for his throne.

Oh, and there’s also some really awesome looking action sequences in there. Also cool. Also very cool. Nice to see T’Challa remain true to his feline roots. Just because you’re a panther rather than a house cat doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use your claws to rip up everything they can tear into. We all know our cats would shred our hubcaps if they could.

Every new look at Black Panther makes me more excited than the previous one. Along with Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel is finally embracing the full creativity of the comic book setting and it all looks amazing. I can’t wait to check these movies out.

Black Panther is scheduled to release on February 16, 2018.
